Tipped staff in the US are often paid below minimum wage and rely on tips to make it up. Leaving nothing is read as a complaint, not a saving.

Card terminals now suggest 20-30% almost everywhere, including at counters where nobody served you a table. Those defaults are set by the payment software, not by custom — 18-20% for table service and nothing at a self-serve counter is entirely normal.

Rates shown are typical amounts, converted to local currency at approximately 27 Aug 2026. Tipping customs evolve and vary from region to region, so treat this as your best starting point rather than a hard rule. Where a bill already shows a service charge, that is usually the tip.

Common questions

How does the tipping calculator work?

Pick the country you are in and what you are paying for, then enter the bill. The calculator applies the local custom for that specific service — a percentage where percentages are normal, a flat per-night or per-bag amount where that is the convention, and a clear "don't tip" where tipping is not part of the culture.

Which countries should I not tip in?

Japan and South Korea are the clearest cases — tipping is not part of service culture and cash is usually refused. Mainland China is close behind. In Iceland, Australia, New Zealand and much of Scandinavia tipping is genuinely optional rather than unwelcome, because staff are paid a full wage.

Should I tip in cash or on the card?

Cash, in most of the world. Card tips reach staff reliably in the US, Canada, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. In Greece, Croatia, Argentina, Italy and much of southern and eastern Europe, a tip added at the terminal often goes to the business rather than the person who served you.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

Then that is usually the tip, and nothing more is expected. Service charges are standard in the UK, Brazil, Costa Rica, Singapore, Hungary and across the Gulf. The one exception worth knowing is the UAE, where the 10% goes to the venue rather than the staff, so residents still tip in cash on top.

What is the best amount to tip?

There isn't one number — the best amount depends entirely on where you are and what you are paying for. In the US it is 18–20% for table service; in Japan the best amount is nothing at all; in Germany it is rounding up to the nearest note. That is what the calculator above works out: the customary range for that country and that service, nudged up or down by how the service actually was.

How accurate are these figures?

They reflect the customary range for each country, not a rule. Flat amounts are converted to local currency at the exchange rate baked in when the page was last built, and rounded to a note or coin you could actually hand over. Customs vary regionally, so treat the result as a confident starting point.
