Tipping guide
Tipping in Italy
Tipping in Italy is minimal, and two lines on your bill explain why: coperto, a per-person cover charge, and servizio, a service charge. Neither is a tip, but both mean you already paid something beyond the food.

The bill already covers service, so locals often leave nothing or just the coins. A few euros for a good meal is generous, not expected.
Watch for "coperto" (a per-person cover charge) and "servizio" on the bill. If servizio is listed, the tip is done — and coperto is a table charge, not a tip.
Rates shown are typical amounts, converted to local currency at approximately 27 Aug 2026. Tipping customs evolve and vary from region to region, so treat this as your best starting point rather than a hard rule. Where a bill already shows a service charge, that is usually the tip.
Common questions
How much do you tip in Italy?
A couple of euros per person after a good dinner, or nothing at all. If servizio appears on the bill, the tip is genuinely already handled.
What is coperto and do I still tip on top?
Coperto is a fixed cover charge, typically 1-3 euros a head, for the table, bread and linen. It is not a tip and it is not optional — but it does mean nobody expects much on top.
Do you tip for coffee in Italy?
No. An espresso at the bar is priced to the cent and locals pay it exactly. Leaving a 10-cent coin is common; anything more is unusual.
