Tipping guide
Tipping in Portugal
Portugal tips modestly, and the thing that trips up most visitors is not the tip at all — it is the couvert, the bread, olives and cheese that arrive unasked and appear on the bill.

The bill already covers service, so locals often leave nothing or just the coins. A few euros for a good meal is generous, not expected.
The couvert (bread, olives, cheese) brought unasked is charged for and is not a tip. Send it back if you do not want it.
Rates shown are typical amounts, converted to local currency at approximately 27 Aug 2026. Tipping customs evolve and vary from region to region, so treat this as your best starting point rather than a hard rule. Where a bill already shows a service charge, that is usually the tip.
Common questions
How much do you tip in Portugal?
5-10% after a proper meal, or simply rounding up. Coins after a coffee or a pastel de nata are entirely sufficient.
What is couvert and do I have to pay for it?
It is the bread, olives and butter placed on your table before you order. It is charged per item eaten and you are entitled to send it back untouched — doing so is normal and nobody will mind.
Should I leave the tip in cash?
Yes. Portuguese card terminals rarely offer a tip option, and cash left on the table reaches the staff directly.
