Tipping in Mexico

Tipping in Mexico is routine in restaurants and around tourism, but far lighter than across the border. The word to look for on your bill is propina — sometimes it is already added, especially for larger groups.

Check the bill for 'propina' or 'servicio' before adding anything — some places include it, and a few add it twice if you're not looking.

10-15% is standard for table service, and the propina is sometimes already on the bill. Street taxi drivers are not tipped; app drivers and airport porters are.

Rates shown are typical amounts, converted to local currency at approximately 27 Aug 2026. Tipping customs evolve and vary from region to region, so treat this as your best starting point rather than a hard rule. Where a bill already shows a service charge, that is usually the tip.

Common questions

How much do you tip in Mexico?

10-15% at restaurants with table service. Hotel housekeeping gets 20-50 pesos a night and porters 20-30 pesos a bag.

Do you tip taxi drivers in Mexico?

Not for a normal street or app taxi — rounding up is enough. Drivers who help with luggage or wait for you on a day trip are a different matter.

Should I tip in pesos or dollars?

Pesos, always. Dollar bills are awkward to change, and coins in foreign currency are effectively worthless to the person you gave them to.
