Indonesian tipping is small and situational. In Bali's tourist areas it is expected; elsewhere much less so. Look for '++' on menus — that is service and tax stacked on the quoted price.

Locals rarely tip at a street stall. In tourist restaurants, hotels and on tours, small tips are now normal and genuinely appreciated.

Hotels and larger restaurants add "plus plus" — 10% service and 11% tax — which is already on the price you see quoted as ++.

Rates shown are typical amounts, converted to local currency at approximately 27 Aug 2026. Tipping customs evolve and vary from region to region, so treat this as your best starting point rather than a hard rule. Where a bill already shows a service charge, that is usually the tip.

How much do you tip in Bali?

5-10% at restaurants without a service charge, 10,000-20,000 rupiah for a spa treatment or a porter, and 20,000-50,000 a night for housekeeping.

What does ++ mean on an Indonesian menu?

Plus service, plus tax — typically 10% service and 11% VAT added to the printed price. It is why the bill is noticeably higher than the menu suggested.

Do you tip drivers in Indonesia?

A driver who takes you around for a day is normally tipped 50,000-100,000 rupiah. Grab and Gojek rides just get rounded up.
