Spaniards tip lightly and without ceremony. Service is included in menu prices, so a tip is small change rather than a percentage, and anything approaching American levels marks you instantly as a visitor.

The bill already covers service, so locals often leave nothing or just the coins. A few euros for a good meal is generous, not expected.

Spaniards tip lightly — coins after coffee, a euro or two per person after a menu del dia. Anything close to 15% marks you out as a tourist.

Common questions

How much do you tip in Spain?

Round up, or leave 5-10% after a proper sit-down dinner. After coffee or tapas, the coins from your change are plenty.

Do you tip at tapas bars?

Barely. Leaving the small coins on the bar is the whole custom, and standing at the bar rather than sitting often makes the drinks cheaper anyway.

Should I tip on the card or in cash?

Cash. Many Spanish card terminals have no tip field at all, and where they do the money often goes to the business rather than the staff.
