Common questions

Do you tip in Iceland?

No. Restaurants, taxis and hotels all expect nothing beyond the bill. Some tourist-facing card terminals now prompt for a tip, which is a response to visitors rather than a local custom.

What about tour guides in Iceland?

Guides on glacier walks, whale watching and multi-day tours will not expect a tip but will accept one. That is the one context where it is a normal thing to do.

Why is everything so expensive if I do not tip?

Because the wage is in the price rather than in your discretion. Icelandic hospitality staff are paid a full salary, which is why the menu prices look high and the total at the end is exactly what you read.
