7 Things To Do Near Yankee Candle in Deerfield, MA

Things to do near Yankee Candle in Deerfield, MA - illustrated fall scene

If you're making a day trip to the Yankee Candle flagship store in South Deerfield, it's worth planning a few more stops. The store is big (roughly 90,000 square feet), but most people spend a couple of hours there, which leaves plenty of day for the rest of the Pioneer Valley.

Below are seven things to do near Yankee Candle Village, all within a short drive. I've noted which ones are seasonal or closed on certain days, because that's what trips people up. Hours change, so check each website before you go.

1. Yankee Candle Village (Your Anchor Stop)

25 Greenfield Rd, South Deerfield, MA 01373 — yankeecandle.com

The flagship is open daily, generally 10 AM to 6 PM, and closes only on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Beyond the candle wall, there's a Bavarian Christmas Village that stays in holiday mode all year, a small candle museum, and food options including a pizza café and ice cream.

My Tip: Weekends in October and the weeks before Christmas get very crowded. A weekday morning is much calmer, and it's the easiest time to find parking.

2. Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory

281 Greenfield Rd, South Deerfield, MA 01373 — magicwings.com

This is the closest stop to the flagship, just down the same road. It's an indoor tropical garden with thousands of free-flying butterflies, and it's warm inside, which is a nice break on a cold day.

Magic Wings is generally open Wednesday through Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday except during school vacation weeks. Admission is around $20 for adults and $10 for kids. Last entry is before closing, so don't leave it for the end of the day.

3. Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation

300 Sugarloaf St, South Deerfield, MA 01373 — mass.gov

Sugarloaf is the best free-ish view in the area. You can hike up or, in season, drive the summit road and look out over the Connecticut River Valley. It's a good fit for a fall foliage day.

The summit road is only open from mid-May to mid-October, and there's a seasonal parking fee, higher for out-of-state visitors. If you're visiting after the road closes, you can still hike up from the base.

My Tip: Clear afternoons make the views. If the forecast is hazy or foggy, swap this for an indoor stop.

4. Berkshire Brewing Company

12 Railroad St, South Deerfield, MA 01373 — berkshire-brewing.com

A local craft brewery with a taproom, a few minutes from the flagship. The taproom hours are limited: Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. It's closed Monday through Thursday, though you can buy beer to go on weekdays.

If you're visiting on a weekday, this one probably won't fit, so plan around it or skip it.

5. Historic Deerfield

84 Old Main St, Deerfield, MA 01342 — historic-deerfield.org

If you want a quieter break from the crowds, Historic Deerfield is a village of preserved 18th and 19th century houses on a tree-lined street. Guided house tours are included with admission and last about 35 minutes.

The main season runs from April through late November, Wednesday to Sunday, so it isn't an option on Mondays or Tuesdays. I'd call this one best for history fans. Kids may get restless on the guided tours.

6. Mike's Maze at Warner Farm (Seasonal)

23 S Main St, Sunderland, MA 01375 — mikesmaze.com

A short drive from South Deerfield, this farm runs an 8-acre corn maze every fall, along with games, a petting zoo and a café. It's a good add-on if you're traveling with kids who've had enough of candles.

It's only open in the fall. This year's season runs through early November, mostly on Fridays, weekends and Columbus Day. Check the schedule before you drive over.

7. Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art

125 W Bay Rd, Amherst, MA 01002 — carlemuseum.org

About 15 minutes south in Amherst, this museum is dedicated to picture book art, with changing exhibitions, an art studio and a bookshop. It's a nice choice for families with younger kids, or anyone who grew up on The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

It's generally closed Monday and Tuesday and has shorter hours on Sunday, and admission is around $15. Allow an hour or two.

How to Plan Your Day

Here's a simple way to put these together:

A car makes this much easier. These stops are spread along Route 5 and 10 and the surrounding roads, and public transit in the area is limited.

If you're building a longer fall trip, my fall weekend getaway in New England and romantic day trips in Massachusetts posts have more ideas.
